The Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) Program teaches climbing instructors to proficiently facilitate and instruct the sport of rock climbing in a single pitch setting. The SPI is the only internationally recognized single pitch climbing instructor certification program in the United States. It was developed to fit in the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) Rock program.
Climbing instructors typically work with higher student-teacher ratios and focus on educating and teaching skills to clients. The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) has endorsed the AMGA's SPI certificate.
AMGA SPI Courses are three days in length (minimum of 27 hours of instruction time) and take place at a single-pitch climbing area where there is a selection of traditional lead routes of at least 5.6 difficulty and top rope routes of at least 5.8 difficulty. The SPI course teaches participants the critical criteria needed for instructing rock climbing in a single pitch environment and passing the SPI Assessment.
