CLINIC DESCRIPTION

Are you looking to take that next step and start lead climbing? This clinic starts with a thorough discussion and demonstration of using fixed protection (bolts, etc.) as well as passive (stoppers) and active (cams) traditional protection. Participants will practice on the ground before transitioning into mock sport and trad leading. Leading principals, anchors, route setup and cleaning are all discussed and practiced. Participants will lead climb in a mock top rope environment while an instructor ascends a fixed line and provides live feedback along the way.

Community Climbing Series - Rock - Self Rescue

CLINIC DESCRIPTION

Things don’t always go as planned while out climbing. Resources are limited and what may be a simple scenario could turn stressful very quickly. This clinic discusses self-rescue principles specific to bottom up and/or top down rock climbing situations (top rope, single pitch lead, multi-pitch). Knots/hitches, belay transfers, belay escapes, counter ascension/lowering, hauling systems and tandem rappels are among possible skill sets taught and practiced. Self-rescue involves the use of common tools and equipment that you might regularly have with you while out at the crag.

So you have been climbing and absolutely love it. Now you are looking for a way to gain more independence and climb outdoors on your own terms. This clinic will cover equipment needs, site assessment for climbing and anchoring potential, and construction of knots and climbing anchors utilizing trees, boulders, and artificial bolts. You will learn to troubleshoot issues that can complicate a day of climbing, such as navigating the cliff edge, tricky cliff-top access, descent options, and rope management. CLINIC DESCRIPTION

Are you looking to take that next step and start lead climbing? This clinic starts with a thorough discussion and demonstration of using fixed protection (bolts, etc.) as well as passive (stoppers) and active (cams) traditional protection. Participants will practice on the ground before transitioning into mock sport and trad leading. Leading principals, anchors, route setup and cleaning are all discussed and practiced. Participants will lead climb in a mock top rope environment while an instructor ascends a fixed line and provides live feedback along the way.

Did you know that the most common accident in climbing occurs while on rappel? Descending a rope safely is an essential skill for every climber. This clinic will cover typical rappelling complications and their solutions. You will learn how to safely secure yourself to an anchor system, good communication between you and your partner, rappel extensions, techniques to create redundancy in your system and methods for tossing and stacking ropes.

Community Climbing Series - Rock - Self Rescue

  • University of Utah/Shoreline Parking Lot

CLINIC DESCRIPTION

Things don’t always go as planned while out climbing. Resources are limited and what may be a simple scenario could turn stressful very quickly. This clinic discusses self-rescue principles specific to bottom up and/or top down rock climbing situations (top rope, single pitch lead, multi-pitch). Knots/hitches, belay transfers, belay escapes, counter ascension/lowering, hauling systems and tandem rappels are among possible skill sets taught and practiced. Self-rescue involves the use of common tools and equipment that you might regularly have with you while out at the crag.

So you have been climbing and absolutely love it. Now you are looking for a way to gain more independence and climb outdoors on your own terms. This clinic will cover equipment needs, site assessment for climbing and anchoring potential, and construction of knots and climbing anchors utilizing trees, boulders, and artificial bolts. You will learn to troubleshoot issues that can complicate a day of climbing, such as navigating the cliff edge, tricky cliff-top access, descent options, and rope management. This clinic is designed to help bridge the gap from gym to crag and provide climbers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to construct safe and effective anchors in a timely fashion.
